DESIGNMATTERS FELLOWSHIP

Enabling the Los Angeles Police Department to build a 21st Century Workforce

In the Spring of 2017, I got the opportunity to work as a Design Fellow for the Los Angeles Innovation Team, an in-house design consultancy funded by the Bloomberg Philanthropies, and housed under the Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti's Office at the City Hall of L.A. As a team of designers, project managers, data analysts, and technologists, we were challenged with the task of helping the Los Angeles Police Department (L.A.P.D) to build a workforce to meet the 21st century demands that is diverse, flexible, and engaging in the community it serves.

The work showcased below are my contribution to the project during the duration of the fellowship.

01

Identifying Stakeholders

Building and Mapping out all the Stakeholders and identifying their pain-points and needs

One of the first task I was assigned to was mapping out and building a list of all the stakeholders and users of the project, know their importance, identify their pain-points and needs, and maintain an outreach excel sheet of all these valuable information which would inform the further steps of secondary and primary field research.

02

Drafting User Personas

Building Fictional Personas based on real life Stakeholders

After creating and updating the Stakeholder List, the I-team tasked me with creating fictional user profiles that represents various stakeholders. Each profile included the name and personal info of the stakeholder, a description, goals and motives as a person, their barriers, pain-points and needs throughout the process and possible outcomes.

03

Design Workshops

Organizing and Conducting Design Workshops with Design Students from ArtCenter College of Design

I participated and helped the I-team in conducting Design Workshops for brainstorming new methods and research tools for documenting our interviews, observation and research. Students from ArtCenter College of Design were invited for the workshop. This was done as a co-design process of different brainstorming activities and scenarios created on the basis of the fictional personas I developed earlier.

04

Contextual Research

Field Studies, Stakeholder Observations and Shadowing, Documentation

I supported the I-team in conducting field research by Shadowing and observing LAPD candidates giving their Personal Qualification Essay (PQE) and undergoing Oral Prep Seminar and Physical Ability Test (PAT) at the City of LA Personnel Department. I also helped in documenting the process using photos, videos and taking down detailed notes and later digitizing it.

05

Contextual Research

Attending the Police Science and Leadership Classes at the LAPD Academy

I also supported the I-team by attending the Police Science and Leadership course taught in the Police Academy, Elysian Park, which was a part of our Field Research in order to understand the hiring and training procedures that LAPD candidates go through before becoming an officer. My role was to document the process by photos and taking down detailed notes and later digitizing it.

06

Focus Group Research

Conducting Focus Group Activities, Discussions, and Surveys, Documentation

I supported the I-team in conducting a focus group research with students of Pierce Community College in Woodland Hills. My role was to help my colleagues conduct various research activities, take notes and later digitize the results.

07

Ideation Sessions

Intense Brainstorming and Ideation Sessions conducted for the I-Team.

I was especially tasked to lead the I-team in ideation and brain-storming sessions throughout my fellowship. I was responsible for coming up with numerous activity games and ideating methods to help the I-team flush out tons of ideas and concepts and later document them.

City Hall Side Projects and Events

While I was in the Los Angeles City Hall, I also got the opportunity to collaborate and work with various talented and inspiring civil employees across different teams and sections of this Government Institution. It was my honor and great pleasure to work with various groups of intelligent and passionate people with very different skill sets than my own and work within the multiple dimensions of city government. It was also a great privilege learn from such highly motivated and spirited people who aim to make the City of Los Angeles the best it can be.
